Characteristics

Location

From the Bassot de l'Arbre you must head SE to find the whole flat area that forms the puig de l'Olla (there is a half-lost path that crosses it entirely). Before reaching the turó de Vallbona and at the height of the Penyes del Castellar, towards the E, the very flat start of a ravine can be seen, the one that further down will be the torrent d'Aigua Pura (Aigua Puda according to the ICC). In this flat stretch of the ravine, beside a doline and at the foot of a rock, the entrance of the pit opens.

Description

Morphology

Through an entrance 2.5 metres in diameter one enters a shaft that gradually widens, reaching 5 metres in diameter at the -14 level, then narrowing slightly in the lower stretch of the single shaft that forms the pit. The cavity develops along a NE-SW joint, with some rather curious channels visible on the NE wall and some slabs of rock half hanging from the wall.

History

The pit was known to a regular informant of R. Amat i Carreras, a shepherd named Vallès. The first exploration took place on 2 September 1924, during the second campaign carried out by Amat and his companions. He explains that the spot where the pit is located was a usual place that smugglers, in other times, used as a hiding place for their merchandise.

Around 1957, Emili Sabaté (SES – CE Puigmal) located and explored the cavity thinking that it was an unpublished pit and, erroneously, renamed it Avenc del Pastor.
