A 33 m deep pit in the Fondo de Vallbona (Garraf), documented by the SES – CE Puigmal around 1960 or 1961 and never rediscovered.

Characteristics

Location

According to the SES Puigmal documentation extracted by Joan Borràs, the pit is located in one of the gullies that descend from the Puig d'Olla (?) toward the Fondo de Vallbona (Garraf), a few metres above the point where the streambed contains a smooth rock slab with a large 'palmito' beside it.

For 30 years, occasional searches have been made along the gullies that descend from both the Puig d'Olla and the Bassot de l'Arbre down to the fondo de Vallbona, and the search has always been fruitless.

In the 1961 edition of the Editorial Alpina map it appears located in the gully that descends from the Bassot de l'Arbre, but the cartographic base is so poor that it cannot be given much weight as to how the Puigmal members placed it, especially considering that the location of the avenc de l'Arboç is completely wrong. In the more modern editions of the same map it has already been placed at random, based, just like us, on the only data we know.

The coordinates provided are also indicative of the area where it could be according to the location given by its explorers.

We have decided to include this cavity in the Espeleoindex in the hope that someone from the new generations who are doing such good work lately in the Garraf will have all the known available data, in case they ever decide to rediscover it.

Description

Morphology

According to the documentation, the pit would be formed by a shaft about 22 metres deep, followed by a series of drops that reach the -29 level. Before reaching the base of the entrance shaft there is a narrow side shaft that descends to the maximum depth level.

Other details

The only references we have are the product of a document provided by Joan Borràs who, 40 years ago, obtained it from the archive of the SES – CE Puigmal and where a sketch of the cavity and a location of it appear.

History

Discovered and explored by members of the SES – CE Puigmal (Barcelona) around 1960 or 1961. Just as with the also “lost” and relatively nearby avenc Mario we have evidence of later explorations, of this one we have never had any news.
