Characteristics

Location

The track that climbs to the puig de la Mola from the Olesa to Begues road follows a ridge as far as the puig de la Bomba (or de l’Escampador). Before reaching the height of the corral de l’Escampador, today reduced to a pile of stones, it passes under two high-tension lines. After the second one, the track rises a little and then comes a long stretch (some 300 m) that is almost flat. At the start of this flat stretch a cart track comes in on the right; it is the one that goes to the corral de can Jaume. Past this track and after 175 paces we leave on the left the track (faintly marked) that used to go to the aforementioned corral. We continue 30 paces more and on the left of the track a artificial hollow is seen from which earth has been taken. We continue 60 metres more and we must find a small cairn (made by us) on the left. It is a little hidden. From this cairn go perpendicular to the track (approximate direction East) some 20 metres until reaching the pit. It is very difficult to find since the terrain is covered by tall kermes oaks, lentisks and many pines about 3 m high. (Lluís Muntan)

Description

Morphology

At the bottom of a uvala opens the entrance (2 by 1 metre) of the pit, which gives access to a 4 metre shaft. Its base is a short ramp towards the SW, where it is blocked by clastic materials. On the eastern side of the plan and in front of the base of the entrance shaft there is another lower concavity, reached by a drop of almost 2 metres, where the point of maximum depth is reached.

History

In March 1957, Lluís Muntan, with directions from people of Olesa, located a pit that he named Avenc del Puig Escampador, but as he was alone he did not descend. A year or two later, members of the SES – CE Puigmal (Barcelona) located and explored a pit near the Puig Escampador and named it with the same name, and ever since it has been known by that name. When Joan Borràs (1974) made the catalogue of Garraf he wrote the entry for both cavities and the one that had been found in 1957 came to be called Avenc del Pla de les Basses.
