Avenc del Nenet

Avenc de 43 m. de fondària a la Figuera (Montsant)

Figuera, La • Priorat85m43m

A 43 m deep pit in la Figuera (Montsant), explored on 19 March 1966 by members of the ERE – CEC.

Characteristics

Location

Going from the village of la Figuera along the T-730 road, in the direction of the Torre de l'Espanyol, once past the coll dels Traginers a track comes out on the left that follows the barranc de Marga and passes by a whole series of farmhouses, most of them abandoned and/or in ruins. One must reach the so-called mas del Comandant and here take a turn-off on the left that soon ends at the mas del Nenet. About 300 metres from this farmhouse, up on the ridge that rises to the SW and at the eastern end of it, where it begins to descend steeply towards the torrent, is the mouth of the pit.

Description

Morphology

Mouth preceded by a small funnel amid bushes. A narrow passage (1X1 m.) leads to a gallery with a floor and ceiling formed by blocks and with the typical appearance of the cavities wrongly called 'tectonic'. This gallery, 7 metres long and 1.5 to 2 metres high, presents an impassable, descending hole that seems to connect 10 metres further down with the rest of the cavity. The aforementioned gallery, with an orientation of N60E, leads to a vertical shaft, considerably narrow, which 7 metres further down gives onto the ceiling of an elongated chamber, with a descending floor and ceiling. This chamber, structured on a joint oriented N20W, descends from the level of –18 to that of –35 metres, and presents its floor occupied by clastic materials and in some places by powdery decalcification materials. Towards the bottom of the joint it becomes blocked until a 4-metre step allows access to a terminal small chamber (level –35). Returning to the upper part of the small chamber, this presents a crawlway that must connect with the entrance gallery, and a small 4-metre shaft. A little further down (level –21) and at the foot of the E wall a mouth opens that allows access to a small chamber and, through a narrow passage, to a shaft divided in two by some wedged blocks, 8.5 metres deep, which leads to the level –32. Here begins a chamber oriented S40E with a small chamber at the SW end and with a floor descending towards the SE, towards where the ceiling rises until reaching a maximum height of 20 metres. The width is 2 to 3 metres and the floor presents concretioned blocks (two of them large), with two small chambers between blocks, and leads to the level of maximum penetration at –43 metres, where the joint remains blocked by small blocks. The walls, which here are concretioned, have the bulging forms characteristic of the detachment fissures of many places.

Hydrology

The humidity, especially in this last chamber, is high.

History

On the initiative of Mr. Josep Abelló i Abelló, of la Figuera, a group of members of the ERE – CEC proceeded to carry out the first exploration and study of the pit on 19 March 1966. We have no news of any other exploration.
