Description
Morphology
The mouth, very elongated (12 m) and somewhat narrow (1.5 m), gives way to a vertical drop (slightly inclined towards the NW) 17 metres deep. It continues as a descending ramp of detrital materials, which follows the NE direction of the pit's main joint; at first it is about 1.5 to 2 metres wide, but then it widens considerably and forms a large elongated chamber that has, on its floor, first the ramp and then a mass of clastic blocks. The dimensions of the chamber are: 38 metres long by 9 wide and 14 high. In the lower part, among the chaos of blocks, a series of pseudo-galleries and small shafts of narrow passages has formed down to the maximum attainable depth of (-55.8 m).
Speleothems
There is an abundance of some flowstone and stalagmites, with the corresponding ceiling formations.
Progression
In the ceiling of the main chamber the so-called Galeria Sardi develops, which can be accessed by two artificial climbing routes, one totally overhanging that runs along the ceiling and the other, at the back of the chamber, more vertical.
The two most recent surveys (ERE, 1973; SIRE, 1994-95) give a considerably different length. The first calculates it at 148 metres and the second at 265 metres. We think that in the ERE one the vertical sections are not added, and in the SIRE one, besides adding them, they count all the side passages of the lower galleries.
History
In the Guia monogràfica de Sant Llorenç del Munt, published in 1935 by the Centre Excursionista de Terrassa, mention is made of the avenc de la Coma d'en Vila, which seems to be how the cavity was formerly known.
Lluís Vergés, in his work Bellesa i atractiu de Sant Llorenç del Munt (1973), explains that some hikers (without specifying dates), on their way to Mura, stopped near the pit and had a dog named Llest; the animal fell into the pit and one of them decided to descend the shaft and rescue the dog. His surprise was when at its bottom he discovered the main chamber and, once the rest of his companions were alerted, they also descended and were left amazed and decided to give the dog's name to the pit. The news spread through the region and it was decided to close with a grille the opening at the bottom of the shaft that gives access to the chamber.
We cannot confirm this story and others like it (that the dog scratched at the bottom of the shaft and the access to the chamber was found...).
The first confirmed exploration was carried out on 18 January 1953 by members of the GES of the then Terrassa delegation of the Club Muntanyenc Barcelonès, accompanied by the tenant farmer of the casa de la Mata, and they also said that they had named it with this name...
Since then it became a very popular cavity, visited by the majority of speleologists and other enthusiasts.
On 16 May 1971, the members of the SIS of the CET: Joan Camí and Salvador Mesalles climbed to the ceiling of the chamber and discovered and explored the Galeria Sardi, dedicated to one of the founders of the SIS, Enric Prat (alias Sardi).
As an anecdotal note we can say that, on 12 October 1994, organised by the SIS and with the participation of the casteller group Minyons de Terrassa, a castells exhibition was held inside the chamber of the pit, among others a pilar de cinc.
