Characteristics

Location

From the house of la Mata, follow a path in a S direction along a ridge that reaches the Punta de les Saleres (the place where the masovers of la Mata left salt for the cows), practically above kilometre 14 of the road from Terrassa to Mura. About 50 metres before the point, below us and to the left, right above the road, some rocky outcrops can be seen; we will descend through them and the pit is found in a corner of them. Description

Morphology

The entrance, one metre in diameter, gives way to a 1.5 metre drop; we will then continue along a steep ramp that leads us to the top of a very narrow shaft 2 metres deep; once past it we will continue along a 3 metre crawl that turns in a W direction, and continues along a gallery that over about 10 metres gains a little in size. We will reach a room with a very low ceiling that makes it difficult to cross through the middle and forces us to go around it along the sides, until we reach the same side of the wall through which we entered, but at the other end. From this point we can continue along a gallery that, after passing a narrow section, begins to climb, only to become impassable a few metres further on.

History

Known for many years by the masovers of the house of la Mata, it seems that in other times it had been used as a canyet. We do not know who made the first exploration, but we have record of a visit by the GES-CMB in March 1962.

Around 1968 it was rediscovered by members of the Centre Excursionista de Terrassa who named it Avenc dels Caps, for inside it they found some heads of livestock. Later, some group from Barcelona renamed it Avenc Mallorca.
