Important 55 m deep pit in Mont-ral, also known as avenc de l'Espanyol or del Dr. Español.

Characteristics

Location

From Mont-ral we will follow the camí de la Foradada, which passes through the Serrat dels Avencs. Once past the avenc de l'Os and the avenc del Teix, we will find a path on the right (ED50 X:339783; Y:4572642). We will follow this path for 55 metres, then we will turn off about 15 metres to the right, in the direction of the cliff, where we will find the cavity.

Description

Morphology

It begins with a gallery on a slope about 15 metres long, then continues with a vertical section of about 14 metres, from where the large diaclase that forms the cavity can already be seen. At the base of this first pit and in a SE direction, a gallery climbing back up begins, filled in by large blocks. In a NW direction, following the main fracture, a 9-metre pit continues, leading to the very middle of a descending ramp occupied by large clastic materials. Among them, one can continue through a new pit of about 10 metres of drop that lands at the bottom of a narrow and elongated base totally occupied by blocks. In the final section of this level, one can still climb about 6 metres to reach a short hanging gallery, formed among the blocks.

History

Like the other nearby cavities, we have no knowledge of who carried out the first exploration or when. We think they could have been speleologists from Reus in the early 1960s. Although it is currently better known as avenc de l'Espanyol or del Dr. Español (we have also been unable to find out why), very possibly the original name was avenc d'en Cavallé.
