Wide shelter with rock paintings (Freginals), in the Serra de Godall.

Characteristics

Location

At the N end of the Serra de Godall. Shortly after km. 10 of the T-331 road going from Ulldecona to Santa Bàrbara, there is a path on the left that, between cultivated fields, leads to the foot of the S slope of the turó dels Masets. Here you must leave the path and climb up the left slope of a small ravine until reaching the shelter.

A doubt arises as to whether the shelter could be located in the municipality of Freginals or that of Godall. According to the different scales of the ICGC map, on most of them it would be in Godall, but on one it appears in Freginals, which is where it has always been placed. The municipal boundary does not seem to be very well defined on the cartography.

Description

Morphology

Elongated overhanging wall about 50 m long. Almost at the middle it has a passage about 6 m long, with a low ceiling that closes immediately.

History

Following their prospecting work in the Serra de Godall, in April 1983 members of the Grup d'Espeleologia d'Ulldecona visited the cavity, discovering an important group of rock paintings of Levantine art about half a metre above ground level. The most significant is perhaps the one located at one end of the shelter, where an archer (well preserved, except for the line of the legs) and the arrows are depicted.

The group of shelters (Masets and Llibreres) have been declared a world heritage site by UNESCO.
