Caratteristiche

Località

The cave entrances are located below the Palau Maricel in Sitges, on the cliff facing the sea. The most comfortable access is by swimming out or with a small inflatable boat from Sant Sebastià beach. Following the coastline towards the W, after about 90 metres we find a large rock embedded at sea level: this is the mouth (E). The main entrance (A) is found continuing 5 metres further.

Descrizione

Morfologia

We enter swimming through the main mouth (A), the most comfortable one, and at 8 metres we duck our heads to position ourselves under a dome 2.5 metres high, where we can already touch the ground with our feet and find a fork of fully submerged galleries. The gallery located further to the W forces us to advance almost 5 metres on a breath-hold until reaching a 3-metre-high shaft, where we stand to rest. Further on the gallery ceiling rises progressively and allows us to take air. After about 7 more metres we reach the Caleta del Relax, with a floor full of rounded pebbles and a small 1.5-metre-high shaft. Gallery E forces a long breath-hold covering about 12 metres underwater, until the ceiling begins to rise forming small domes. At 4 metres from the beginning of the gallery, a conduit in a sharp turn to the right communicates with the outside through the other entrance of the cave. Continuing along gallery (E) and heading N, after a couple more small dives we reach the last metres of the gallery, more comfortable to traverse, where la Platgeta awaits us, also with a floor covered in pebbles and a small 1.5-metre-high shaft. A few metres before reaching the exit we find the narrowest passage of the entire cavity (0.50x0.50 m).

Idrologia

The shallow water depth oscillates between 1 metre and a little over 1 metre. The cave can change its physiognomy due to strong storms: the last 5 - 6 metres of both galleries could become totally inaccessible due to the accumulation of sand.

Progressione

The return can be made by exiting through the mouth (E), since the direction of the gallery allows it more comfortably. Just in front of the large rock that blocks the way, we can take air again and after another 5-metre breath-hold we can exit to the outside either to the left or to the right of the large stone. This is a cavity where the greatest possible precautions must be taken, and only enter it when the state of the sea allows it, that is, when the sea is totally calm.

Altri dettagli

As a curiosity it should be noted that la Platgeta would be located just below the Arxiu Històric Municipal of Sitges, and the Caleta del Relax would be a few metres away right under the Ajuntament itself.

Storia

Rafa Fraguas, from a very young age and fishing in the area, had always been attracted by its main entrance. After a few years he began to enter it and traverse its galleries to fish for sea bass, equipped with a wetsuit, light and basic diving gear. On 13-06-2018, together with Miquel Muntanyola, they access it and make the survey.

Espeleoíndex note: We have not been able to find any reference, either old or modern, to this cavity. As the author of the record explains, it had been known for many years by rod fishermen but it seems that no one had ever decided to go beyond the mouth.

Toponymy: The bastion of Sitges, now with a replica of the only cannon remaining from the town's maritime defence, over time has been written with different spellings, from the Castilian baluarte to the Noucentista baluart (from 1901 to 1936 the weekly Baluart de Sitges was published) and for some years now the standardised baluard. Plaques and signs with all three forms are found in the old town of Sitges.

Note biospeleologiche

In the water inside the cavity we can find schools of small prawns, rock mullets and the occasional good-sized sea bass.
