Caratteristiche

Località

Above Km 1.5 of the B112 road from Collbató we take the turnoff towards the Coves del Salnitre; after 450 m we leave the vehicle beside the Salut recreational area and on foot take the path that climbs the torrent itself in a N direction; at 250 m we leave the torrent bed along its right hydrographic slope in a rocky area and head in a W direction until, in about 60 m, we reach a gully at the foot of the cliffs; we climb the gully and in about 20 m we reach the base of the cave.

The cave is located 110 m to the NE of the Cova de la Codolosa, being visible from it.

It must be said, however, that the cavities are not in the Canal del Xacó as Llopis says, but in the Torrent de la Font Seca. The low precision of the old cartography must have been the cause of the error, since the Canal del Xacó is the one located further E, beside the Cova Freda. Despite this, we will continue calling them del Xacó so as not to create more confusion.

Descrizione

Morfologia

A cave of modest dimensions and oriented to the south, characterised by having two superimposed chambers at two levels and separated by a horizontal partition, the upper one being somewhat more spacious and clean and the lower one having blocks detached from the ceiling.

Storia

The first and practically the only reports about these little caves were those described by Llopis and Thomas in the year 1953, which due to their scanty dimensions had gone unnoticed, although cited in the different speleological inventories of Montserrat. Despite this, in the Catàleg Espeleològic de Catalunya, vol 6 (2006) they are erroneously confused with the Cova C.2a del Salnitre, which have nothing to do with them.
