Caratteristiche

Località

Above Km 1.5 of the B112 road from Collbató we take the turnoff toward the Coves del Salnitre; after 450 m we leave the vehicle beside the Salut recreational area and, on foot, take the path that climbs the torrent itself in a N direction. At 250 m we leave the torrent bed along its right hydrographic slope in a rocky area, and head W until reaching, in about 60 m, a gully at the foot of the cliffs. We continue W along the path at the foot of the cliffs that links the different climbing routes and in about 30 m we reach the small cave at the foot of the cliff, discreetly hidden by vegetation.

The cave is located 85 m NE of the Cova de la Codolosa.

It should be said, however, that the cavities are not in the Canal del Xacó as Llopis says, but in the Torrent de la Font Seca. The lack of precision of the old cartography must have been the cause of the error, since the Canal del Xacó is the one located furthest E, beside the Cova Freda. Nevertheless, we will continue calling them del Xacó so as not to create more confusion.

Descrizione

Morfologia

Small cave, south-facing, characterized by being on clay sediments like the neighbouring caves of the same origin, with an earthy and sloped floor; at the back of the chamber there is a small conduit completely blocked by sediments.

Storia

The first and practically the only reports about these small caves were those described by Llopis and Thomas in 1953, which due to their tiny dimensions had gone unnoticed, although cited in the various speleological inventories of Montserrat. Nevertheless, in the Catàleg Espeleològic de Catalunya, vol 6 (2006) they are mistakenly confused with the Cova C.2a del Salnitre, which have nothing to do with them.
