Caratteristiche

Località

Leaving the town of Castelldefels along the C-245, once past the “roundabout” at the height of the Can Aymerich quarry, Torre Barona and the Hotel Rey Don Jaime can be seen on the right. The first street on the right (c/ Raconada) goes up to the hotel, but a few metres from its start, a branch road with no exit turns off to the right. At the end of this alley, on the other side of a masonry wall that blocks the way, is the cave, at the foot of the steep S slope on which Torre Barona stands.

Descrizione

Morfologia

The entrance is 2.5 metres high by 2.3 wide and leads into a wide gallery, almost horizontal and running N. At its end there are masonry stairs that, turning towards the E, lead to the flooded zone (elevation – 2.6 m). At this point water-extraction pumps are installed; passing between pipes and a masonry platform, one reaches a narrow passage that gives access to a window hanging 6 metres above the first lake. This is the base of a fusiform shaft about 20 metres high and 7 in diameter. Towards the N there is a room of smaller dimensions through which one can ascend a few metres via some chimneys. At the S end of the large room there is a sumped passage that leads to another adjacent room.

The cavity runs along a fault striking NE and its conjugate striking SW, cutting Jurassic materials (dolomitized limestone).

Idrologia

The flooded zone is at elevation – 2.6 m. At this point water-extraction pumps are installed.

Storia

The cova del Centenari was discovered speleologically, accidentally, on 6 October 1996 by the members of the UME de Gavà, Marc Albaigés and Miquel Benito.

It is obvious that the cavity was known and its water resources used, but it has not been possible to find out whether in ancient times it was known by any specific name, since in the old catalogues of the area there is no cavity that could give the slightest clue. It seems that some people called it “la Mina”.
