Caratteristiche

Località

From Santa Linya we will follow the LV-9043 road that heads towards the Santa Linya railway station; just leaving the village the road stops being asphalted, but it is suitable for all kinds of vehicles. On reaching kilometre 5.6 we find the bridge over the barranc de Geguins or Giguins according to the ICGC. The shelters are on the hydrographic right-hand slope of the barranc de Geguins, between the track and the cova de Geguins. There is no path to reach them, you must be equipped with cutting tools to be able to get through the thick undergrowth of the dense forest.

Descrizione

Morfologia

Abric I de Geguins: about 25 metres before reaching the cova de Geguins, the wall of the cliff forms a kind of shallow shelter where Abric I is found, along with others that are smaller; this one has a globular shape and is divided into two levels, with a smoke-blackened roof and signs of having been used by shepherds, its length is 4 metres.

Abric II de Geguins: from Abric I, following the cliff face in the direction of the track we find Abric II, it is the largest, it has a length of 12 ascending metres, with a constant width of about 2 metres, it had been used to shelter flocks.

Abrics III and IV de Geguins: following the cliff in the direction of the track about fifteen metres away we find abrics III and IV, these are small shallow shelters about a couple of metres deep.

Storia

The discovery of the cova de Geguins and the nearby Abrics, which as a whole are known as coves de Geguins, is the result of various visits made by different hiking groups throughout the decade of the seventies of the last century; it is curious that they were carried out independently of one another, but all of them involved the collection of ceramic fragments, which caused a significant removal of the materials and their partial dispersal. One of the first hikers was Josep Enric Gómez, who on one of his outings found the cavity and collected a large fragment, which he later gave to the then Archaeology Section of the Institut d’Estudis Ilerdencs (IEI). With the data provided by him, an outing was carried out on 11 April 1977 that led to the provisional naming of the cavity as “Cova de la Cabra” due to finding inside it a goat skull probably not very old.
