Sales de Llierca • Garrotxa 1315m 30m

A 1315-metre cavity excavated in gypsum at Sales de Llierca, explored by the GE Badalona in 1993 and 1994, with access from Tortellà and a route through galleries and underground rivers.

Characteristics

Location

From Tortellà we go to the centre of Sales de Llierca, where the town hall is located; once past it and the church, which are on our left, we follow the second track we find on the right, just where the asphalt ends (data from 2009), which after 500 metres leads to can Tomet. The track makes a left-hand bend and descends towards the Borró river; we cross it and at 60 metres we find a path on the right which we ignore, and 40 metres further on we find an esplanade on the right where vehicles can be left. From this point a small path starts which leads to the aforementioned path and after 150 metres places us in the bed of the Borró river; we follow it downstream and at 50 metres we find some high walls on the left. When these walls begin to diminish, after 130 metres from the start of the route along the river and on the right-hand side, we see the can Bellús farmhouse; a small uphill path on the left leads us in a few metres to the entrance of the Bora de can Bellús. From this mouth we can follow downstream along a small path parallel to the river for about 80 metres, where on the left the path climbs until it places us above the depression formed by the Bora no. 2; following the path we will reach the depression of the Bora no. 3 and 3 bis, which do not belong to the system. We continue ascending along the path and reach a junction: to the left we will reach the Bora no. 5 and 5 bis, to the right, a few metres on the left, we will find the Bora Gran or no. 4. Back on the path, this leads us to the Bores no. 6 and 6 bis and 7 and 7 bis, as well as the Bora no. 8, which does not belong to the system. The path turns right, going around the Bores 6 and 6 bis, to begin climbing up to a wide track which descends to the Borró river. The Bora no. 11 or Timba 11 is reached by a left-hand diversion from the path that runs between the Bora Gran and the Bores no. 6 and 6 bis, but which is very overgrown. In all this sector the vegetation is very dense and it is advisable to carry some appropriate cutting tool, more suited to the jungle than to gardening.

Description

Morphology

The system develops within a small outcrop of gypsum intercalated in the surrounding limestones. The total route is 1315 metres and the height difference is 30 metres. The speleometry given by the authors has been respected, but we do not know what criteria were adopted in order to place the 0 level at the lowest point of the system.

Hydrology

Through the system flow placidly the waters captured at various points, finally draining through a point not located in the Borró river. Occasionally the Bora de Can Bellús acts as an overflow. From the Bora de Can Bellús a stretch of the cavity can be visited without any difficulty. The gallery leads us to a wide chamber; once through it and following the lower part of the gallery we reach the point where two rivers converge. Along the left one, temporary, a hidden and narrow passage situated above the plunge pool leads us towards the Bora 5; after passing the parallel galleries we find a good stretch occupied by water, which does not facilitate exploration and sometimes prevents it. Back at the starting point, the right-hand river, perennial, leads us to the sector with the greatest length. This first stretch is wide but with a low ceiling, with many chances of getting wet on exiting through the Bora no. 2.

Progression

From the Bora Gran or no. 4, situated at the bottom of the Torrent, through a beautiful meander we can access the different conduits that converge at the survey point of section 32 and from there continue along the different conduits that lead to the Bora no. 11. From here, from the main gallery a narrow conduit leaves to the left and in a southerly direction which will take us to the Bores no. 6 and 6 bis, and turning towards the north-east we will reach the Bores no. 7 and 7 bis. From the Bora 11 the gallery heads towards the Bora no. 2 and the Bora de Can Bellús.

History

Explored by the GE Badalona and collaborators from other organisations during the years 1993 and 1994. Previously the sector between the Bora de Can Bellús and the Bora no. 2 had already been explored, as well as a stretch of the left-hand river at the confluence, since painted arrows were found pointing towards the exit, although it is not known who the explorers were. The synonyms that appear in the system correspond only to the mouth of the Bora de Can Bellús.
