Characteristics

Location

From Solsona we will reach Coll de Jou by the LV-4241b road and here we must turn left onto the L-401 towards Coll de Nargó. Before reaching Cambrils, at km 26.9, an asphalted track leaves to the left that leads to the castle of Odèn and the church of Santa Cecília. The track continues in a S direction and climbs along the ridge of the Serra d'Odèn. At the height of the Tossal Rodó another track coming from the houses of Oliola joins it and a few metres further on is the Fontcoberta hut. We must follow the track onwards until we find another, in worse condition, that leaves obliquely to the right and that will take us to the coll de l'Alzina. From this col, we must enter the wood in a westerly direction, crossing some banks of old cultivated fields and about 60 metres from the col, at the upper part of one of the terraces and at the foot of some holm oaks, is the entrance of the pit.

The area where the cavity is located is delimited by a wire fence.

Description

Morphology

Entrance 1.5 metres in diameter opened in the layer of topsoil and altered conglomerate, in the middle of some holm oaks. A 4 metre drop to a small chamber of conglomerate decomposition. Continuation of the shaft in the SW end of the chamber, on an E20S joint, very clearly observable. The section of the shaft is typically oval and elongated in the direction of the joint, with a small channel due to the infiltrations from the lateral conduit. At -15 metres the shaft cuts a layer of marls 15 centimetres thick. Further down there is a small ledge that takes the shaft towards the W. The floor (-32) forms a floor plan of 9 x 3.5 metres in which an E-W joint can be seen at the N end. To the W there is a small gallery rising from the floor occupied by an accumulation of decalcified conglomerate, the base of a lateral spindle 11 metres high, up to a layer of marls that limits it above.

Hydrology

From here the infiltrations begin, especially abundant according to the time of year. At the -9 level, in the W end of the shaft there is a lateral conduit that brings new infiltrations.

History

The first exploration took place in September 1963, when a team of the Operació Solsonès, made up of members of the EDES, EDECA and ERE-CEC, accompanied by neighbours from Oriola, showed them the cavity.

A second visit, on 12-3-1967 by members of the ERE-CEC, was intended for the topography and study of the cavity.
