Characteristics

Location

We will leave el Cogul from the N part of the village, continuing E along a local road; at 225 metres we reach a crossroads, to the left it would take us to Castelldans, we must continue to the right along the paved track heading to Albagés. After travelling 480 metres, on the left, we will find the car park and the Interpretation Centre of la Roca dels Moros; from this point we must follow the track for 3 kilometres and turn off to the right along a track that crosses the Set river; once the river has been crossed, at the crossroads we must continue to the right and pass beside the Santiago farm; from the farm we will follow the main track, after travelling 2 kilometres on the right we will find the installation of an antenna with a photovoltaic panel, we must continue 700 metres further on and park in a widening of the track. A few metres further on, on the right, we find a track that descends to some olive groves; we will need to go down to the next olive grove where we will again find a track that will take us down to the rock where on the N face there is the rock shelter.

Description

Morphology

It is a worked rock shelter with a width of about 20 metres and a little more than 5 metres deep, with a height of about 2 metres at the porch, while at the back it is no more than 0.8 metres high. The interior is completely partitioned with walls almost half a metre thick; in one of the rooms we find a construction with a barrel vault. Outside there are remains of constructions that have been modified over time, reusing the stone of earlier constructions.

History

Known and used since time immemorial. It is currently used as a hut. It is already cited by Pascual Madoz in the 19th century, in the Diccionario Geográfico-Estadístico-Histórico de España y sus posesiones de Ultramar, while on page 24 he cites it as la Cova when placing it as a boundary with the municipal area of Albagés, on page 459 he calls it la Coba when referring to it as a municipal area within the jurisdiction of el Cogul.
