Characteristics

Location

We will leave the car at km 20.8 of the T-707 road, at the height of the ruined mas de Joan Pau. From here we will take a track (closed to vehicles) in a S direction. After about a hundred metres we will take a path to the left that will lead us to the Grau de Racons. Shortly after we will find a path to the left that will lead us directly to the cave.

Description

Morphology

It is a rock shelter 37 metres wide, but of little depth, a maximum of 4 metres and an average of about 2 metres. It hangs on the crag and its access is from the W, where we find the widest part.

History

This cave is known as l'Hospital dels Carlins because the Carlist general Cercós was brought here wounded: Isidre Pàmies i Borràs, àlies Cercós d'Aleixar.

It is not known exactly whether it was in Prades or in l'Aleixar, but it seems that, due to a betrayal, Isidre Pàmies was seriously wounded around 20 October 1873; he was transferred, on a mule, towards the mas Joan Pau de la Mussara, but for greater safety they hid him in a rock shelter on the crag, called l'Hospital dels Carlins, where he died and was buried in the fossar de la Mussara. He was 29 years old and held the rank of colonel and, posthumously, the pretender Carles named him general.
