Characteristics

Location

There are a couple of options for getting there. One of them can be done from the Torre de Tamúrcia (Tremp): past the village you must take a track on the left towards Casa Jaumet, cross the barranc de Miralles (from this point on a 4x4 vehicle) and the corrals de Sallants, where we will leave the vehicle 10 minutes from the ermita de Sant Gervàs. We will follow the path that climbs steeply towards the Pas del Portús until we find a turn-off on the left that heads towards the W following the base of the cliff; at a good distance from the first one we will find the Forat Roig, recognisable by its large entrance and some large blocks at the entrance. The Cova Gran is one kilometre further to the W.

There is another access which, although longer in distance, is gentler: you must take the road from Senterada to Pont de Suert and turn off towards Adons (Pont de Suert); once in the village we will leave the vehicle and follow the path that climbs up to the Pas del Portús; once past this we will follow the base of the cliff towards the W, as far as the Forat Roig, which is almost a kilometre away, and from there to the cova Gran there is another kilometre. This whole stretch is done along a faint path between scree and box trees; from time to time there is a cairn.

Description

Morphology

Entrance 5 metres wide by about 15 metres high, with clastic blocks, one of them measuring 5 x 3 metres half blocking the entrance. The ceiling is high until towards the end of the gallery, where it drops suddenly to the floor. The floor is slightly ascending.

Other details

The floor is covered by a good thickness of sheep droppings.

History

Although known since ancient times by the local people, the first speleological reference we know of is provided by R. Jeannel, who visited it on 18-7-1911 during his biospeleological campaigns.

It is not until 25-9-1977 that it is visited again by Oleguer Escolà and members of the ERE – CEC, also for biospeleological purposes, and they survey it.
