Characteristics

Location

From Camarasa you must follow the track that climbs to the serra Carbonera and more specifically to the ermita de Sant Jordi. On reaching the flat area where the ermita stands, take the track on the right until you come to some corrals; just behind these a path sets off that in 400 metres brings you to a field that in some years is cultivated. The path continues across the cultivated field towards the N; after 200 metres and on the left of the path you will find the entrance of the avenc Ocampo. Following the path 79 metres further on and on the left of it, you will find the avenc tapat covered by some branches to prevent animals from falling in.

Description

Morphology

The entrance, less than one metre in diameter, gives way to a 14-metre-deep shaft; this is a 0.66-metre-wide fissure, while it gains length as you descend. Once at the base, this divides: towards the W you descend down a steep ramp and drops where there are very unstable blocks and it has not been fully explored; on the E side, the shaft continues descending for 18 metres, but you have to look for the widest points to get through. At some point the fissure has an inclination of 80º, as well as some sinuous point where it changes direction. The cavity has a depth of 32 metres. It is possible that at some point of the fissure it continues as a passage, but to reach it you would have to rig a handline.

History

The cavity was cleared and explored on 18-06-2011 by members of the GELL – CE Lleida, and David Poca from Bellpuig with a companion. This cavity had been located some years earlier by Lluís Pérez Freixenet and remained pending clearance.

On 9 November 2015, Lluís Pérez Freixinet wrote a comment on the blog “Catalunya subterrània”, where he reported the existence of this cavity, which is pending survey and naming. Unfortunately our friend Lluís, after a long illness, left us in January 2016.

In February 2016 a team from Espeleoíndex, taking advantage of an excursion to the area, descended the first shaft of the cavity; shortly afterwards we got in contact with members of the GELL to find out at what point the exploration of the cavity stood, but they did not seem very up to date on the matter; they told us that around those dates they had done a major clearance at the entrance of a nearby pit, which they named avenc de la Convocatòria, but it turned out that it was the avenc Ocampo, an already known cavity located very close to the new cavity; Espeleoíndex suggested transferring the previous name to the new cavity, which they thought was fine.

On 14 June 2016 it was explored and surveyed by members of the Espeleo Club de Gràcia, who published the cavity record on the blog Catalunya subterrània. Meanwhile, on 25 June 2016, a team from Espeleoíndex, unaware of the previous exploration, surveyed the cavity again, observing that between the visit made in February and the one in June, someone had explored it, since they had installed new “spits” next to the parabolts that were already there.
