Esquerda Xula

Avenc de 39 metres de fondària a Morera del Montsant.

Morera de Montsant, La • Priorat229m39m

A 39-metre-deep pit in the Morera de Montsant, explored by the GE Lleidatà in 2004.

Characteristics

Location

From the Morera de Montsant we will take the path of the grau de la Grallera up to the top of the serra Major (ridge path). Once we are at the crossroads we will follow the path that descends along the bed of the barranc del Vidalbar, winding through the meanders of the Comellar del riu. Once past the cova Soronelles we take the path of the Castells. On reaching a flat area at the bottom of the ravine where the path wants to climb up again, we leave it on the right and go up a gully until we reach a horizontal terrace, and we will make our way as best we can in a northerly direction, finding the entrance about 50 metres away. Description

Morphology

The mouth is a 0.6x2 metre fissure where a 2-metre step has to be overcome (going up it is somewhat more difficult if the wall is wet). Immediately, on the right, we find a horizontal gallery. At the end of this gallery and on the left, light can be seen coming from outside through the upper mouth. From the entry point we can continue down the main gallery; a whole series of passages between blocks will lead us to an elongated chamber, the widest and deepest place in the cavity. At the end of this chamber and making an 8-metre climb up on the left, one reaches an upper ceiling. Then, progressing along a ledge, we will reach a group of rather narrow fissures which end up closing.

Speleothems

In the horizontal gallery there are fossilised stalactites and stalagmites.

Progression
