Chaotic rock shelter in Gurp (Tremp), 17 metres wide by 7 metres deep and 5 metres maximum height, formerly used as a corral or shelter.

Characteristics

Location

You have to go to the village of Gurp (Tremp), cross the village and before reaching the Raval you will find a large parking area. From here we will head back towards the cluster of houses; just as we arrive, on the right, a wide ascending path leads us to the water tanks. Behind these begins the path with yellow paint marks that climbs the cliff in zigzags some 75 metres of height; at one of the bends you must leave the path and go up the slope towards a pile of large blocks that can be seen at the foot of the cliff, the rock shelter is inside.

We have classified the corrals from West to East, so this is the eighth corral in an E direction; it is located at the foot of the cliff on the slope above the village of Gurp.

Description

Morphology

It is a rock shelter 17 metres wide by 7 metres deep and a maximum height of 5 metres.

Other details

From the remains of building material it can be seen that it has been used as a corral or shelter. It does not have any dry stone closing wall; on the other hand, the closure is formed by large blocks fallen from the ceiling.

History

Known since time immemorial. Initially, before the construction of the village of Gurp, they were very probably used as housing; later they came to be given a use as corrals. In the 1860 census they already appear cited as corrals. Some of the names of the corrals are known, cova d'en Peixeco, cova d'en Genera or Geneva, cova d'en Muntaner, cova de la Roca, cova d'en Sisco Macià, but we have not been able to identify which corral each of the names corresponds to.
