Characteristics

Location

In the NE sector of the Montserrat region of Frares Encantats, not far from the coll de Port. The cavity occupies almost the entirety of the base of a secondary crag located below the north wall of the Frares Encantats.

To get there, we will take the road that leads from can Maçana to the Monestir. Around kilometre point 3.25 there is a small rest area where we will leave the car. On the other side of the road an ascending path sets off. Following it we will reach the Plaça de Catalunya, a sparse little clearing in the forest from which we have good views towards la roca Foradada and the Cadireta. We will continue climbing along the path, leaving on the right the path that comes from la roca Foradada and can Maçana. Further on we will cross a torrent and a few metres beyond we will already see the “Cova Roja” on our right and above us. The just over 100 metres that separate us from it we will have to cover over terrain with no defined path, quite overgrown and steep.

Description

Morphology

With its 87 m width we are before the largest rock shelter in Montserrat. The cova de l'Arcada, the second largest, is 74 m wide. It is not very deep, for the most part it stays around 6-10 m, reaching a maximum of 13 m around “la Cambra”.

The most notable characteristic is that in the central sector its ceiling rises to more than 40 m, generating a cavity within the cavity, the “Cova Roja”. Because of its dimensions this one is clearly visible from afar in the landscape, standing out for the reddish colouring of its rock, a characteristic that has given the cavity its name. In general, the whole cavity, including its floor and the blocks, has a certain reddish tone. On either side of the “Cova Roja” there develop sheltered spaces with variable heights. On the south side we find flat, horizontal ceilings in which different climbing routes have been opened.

The entire floor of the cavity is occupied by blocks, some of good size and between which galleries of a few metres in length are formed. The presence of these blocks, together with the slope of the floor, means that the cavity is not very easy to move through. Only at the north end does the topography soften. It is here that we find “la Cambra”, the only flat and habitable corner of the cave. In it we can see the ceiling blackened by fire having been made there, and its eroded state indicates to us that this was a long time ago, an observation reinforced by the fact of finding layers of ash beneath the clay that forms the floor of “la Cambra”.

History

The cavity appears in the Catàlech Espeleològich de Catalunya, by Norbert Font i Sagúé, published in the Butlletí del CEC in 1897. It gives the following description:

“114) – Cova Roja. It is in the municipality of Marganell, an hour from can Massana following the road that goes to Montserrat. It is the consequence of a great landslide of stones from the mountain of Montserrrat. It is more than 300 pams in height by very few in depth. Eagles breed there.”

We can see that the description is limited to the “Cova Roja”, without mentioning the sheltered spaces that exist on either side of the cave.

Over more than 100 years the Cova Roja or Coves Roges appears cited in most of the collections, inventories, catalogues, cartography and hiking guides of Montserrat. It is, then, the typical case of a cavity that appears in an old catalogue and the following catalogues limit themselves to recording its existence without anyone having contributed new data to those already set out first by Font i Sagué.

On the ICGC map it does not appear referenced.
