Description
Morphology
Cave no. 1: Behind it is the chapel of Santa Caterina. About 3 m wide by 4 m deep and about 2.5 m high. The side wall built with small stone joined with mortar can be seen, and the ceiling forms a vault following the rock of the cave. Currently DISAPPEARED.
Cave no. 2 or of Sant Domènec: It is about 7 m deep by about 6 wide and about 3 m high. Some sections of walls built with sandy mortar are preserved; it has been used as a dwelling; apart from some stones the floor is flat. The cavity is raised about one metre above the path. The recess for fitting the door can be seen; at this point the floor is paved with slabs.
Cave no. 3 or of Sant Magí or Cova Santa: About 9 m wide, about 4 m deep and 3 m high. The floor is flat; on one side a wall that closed the enclosure can be seen; in the middle, both on the floor and on the ceiling, there is the springing of a wall, as well as a hole, making use of the rock, used as a niche. Gavín mentions it as Santa Susanna and publishes a photograph where the walls and the door can be seen.
Cave no. 4: The first building we find are the remains of the hermitage of the Mare de Déu de la Salut, previously dedicated to the Mare de Déu del Roser, troglodytic, built close to the rock that forms one of the side walls. Behind it can be seen what were small gardens and a small cave 2.5 m used as a store.
Cave no. 5: It is a cavern about 2 m deep, about 6 wide and about 3.5 m high.
Cave no. 6: There are remains of walls at the entrance and covering a side hole, which helps to believe that it must have been inhabited. On the back wall three names are written with the date 1890; from the type of handwriting we believe they may very well date from that period.
Cave no. 7: It is the largest, it has a route of about 15 m and measures about 6 m deep by about 2 high.
There are other overhangs that seem to have given shelter to respective oratories.
Progression
Cave no. 5: Turning back, after the stairs, we find a path on the right that goes into the forest, close to the cliff; following it we can see three more caves. The first we find is the one we call cave no. 5.
Cave no. 6: If we continue following the base of the cliff, we find the last two cavities (caves no. 6 and 7), which from the speleological point of view are the most interesting. They are located one beside the other.
History
Known since time immemorial. The Cova de Sant Magí is already mentioned in some of the old catalogues (Puig y Larraz, 1896; Ferraté, 1918).
In 1570 the confraternity of the Roser was established there by the friars residing at sant Magí; when it was transferred to the sanctuary, it changed its name; from then on only a hermit resided there. Gavín publishes a photo where it is said to be in ruins, but it preserves the front part where the door and a window can be seen; at present this has disappeared and only the side and rear walls remain standing.
