Characteristics

Location

The cova Petita is located at the base of the cliffs, about 50 metres away to the W of the Cova Fosca de Sant Gervàs, in the Serra de Sant Gervàs (Tremp).

There are a couple of options for getting there. One of them can be done from the Torre de Tamúrcia (Tremp): after the village, take a track to the left in the direction of Casa Jaumet, pass the barranc de Miralles (from here on, a 4x4 vehicle) and the corrals de Sallants, where we will leave the vehicle 10 minutes from the ermita de Sant Gervàs.

There is another access which, although longer in distance, is gentler: take the road from Senterada to Pont de Suert and turn off towards Adons (Pont de Suert); once in the village we will leave the vehicle and follow the path that climbs up to the Pas del Portús; once past this we will follow the base of the cliff towards the W, as far as the Forat Roig, which is almost a kilometre away, and from there to the cova Gran there is another kilometre. This whole stretch is done along a faint trail among scree and box trees, with an occasional cairn.

Description

Morphology

Cave with a tall entrance porch, approximately 5 m in extent and 20 m high, which has two openings: the upper one, of unknown characteristics, and a lower one that gives access to the cave.

The passage is 27 m. It begins with a short corridor, followed by a small step that gives access to the widest chamber of the cavity. At the far end of the chamber there is a small gap which, if climbed, gives access to a chimney about 7 m high, this being the terminal point of the cave.

Progression

History

The first report we have is provided by R. Jeannel, who visited it on 18-7-1911 during his biospeleological campaigns.

It was not until 25-9-1977 that it was visited again by members of the ERE – CEC.
