Characteristics

Location

On the road from Os de Balaguer to Alberola, on reaching approximately kilometre 6, we will take a track on the left that leads to the Font de la Mora. This track, which is the same one that leads to the cova Joan d'Os, we will have to follow for about three hundred metres from the Font de la Mora. The cavity is located about 20 metres to the left of the path, above the NW end of a crop field; the entrance is covered by bushes.

Description

Morphology

The cave begins with a narrow gallery that widens after a few metres, forming a small chamber. From this gallery a crawlway emerges on a descending ramp that places us at the head of a shaft of -18 metres. At the base of this we find the main joint of NW direction, with an average width of 1.5 metres and a height of 12 metres. In this gallery of 30 metres in length we find a step of 8 metres in depth by which one reaches the point of maximum drop, in a chaos of blocks.

Speleothems

In this gallery of 30 metres in length we find a collapse of a stalagmitic flow of 10 metres in height, which is found in equilibrium occupying the centre of the floor.

Progression

The cave begins with a narrow gallery that widens after a few metres, forming a small chamber. From this gallery a crawlway emerges on a descending ramp that places us at the head of a shaft of -18 metres. At the base of this we find the main joint of NW direction. At the other end of the gallery we find a step of 8 metres in depth by which one reaches the point of maximum drop in a chaos of blocks.

History

Of this cavity only the short entrance gallery was known. In 1976, members of the GEB accompanied by some youths from Tartareu noticed a possible continuation; once the passage was cleared, they proceeded to explore the new galleries.
