Characteristics

Location

The cavity is located in the municipality of Àger. It is reached via the paved track that climbs from Àger towards the coll d'Ares; on reaching the plans de Badia, take the track on the left towards the font de l'Hospital and the former monastery of Sant Llorenç (currently in ruins), following the track to the end until reaching the Plana d'en Lluís. From here, along the western side of the plain, a path sets off towards the various climbing routes of the so-called paret de Catalunya. Once at the foot of the cliff, one need only follow it westwards until reaching the cave.

It can also be reached via Corçà and the Mas de Carlets; on reaching the latter the entrance is already visible, but at present the old paths are lost and one must go across country.

Description

Morphology

The entrance is 4x9 metres and opens a few metres above the base of the cliff. Inside, the cave bifurcates for 14 metres before rejoining at the start of a slope. The gallery continues descending until reaching a 4 metre drop. Once this is passed, there are some joint intersections before continuing along a straight conduit that leads to a chamber. The gallery continues descending until it ends filled with sediments; before that, however, there is a 5 metre shaft that leads to a sloping gallery that leads to the lowest point of the cavity. The cave has a vertical drop of 76 metres (+3/-73) and 325 metres of passage.

Speleothems

In the chamber there is an important lithogenic process.

Progression

Once inside, the cave bifurcates for 14 metres before rejoining at the start of a slope. The gallery continues descending until reaching a 4 metre drop. Once this is passed, some joint intersections are found before continuing along a straight conduit that leads to a chamber. The gallery continues descending until it ends filled with sediments; before that, however, there is a 5 metre shaft that leads to a sloping gallery that leads to the lowest point of the cavity.

Other details

At the start of a slope, Neolithic remains are found. There is also an interesting archaeological site, where some excavations have been carried out to extract material.

History

Cavity known since ancient times; inside, the inscriptions left by some of its explorers are preserved, some of them noteworthy in part for their good calligraphy: Bellmunt, 8 de juliol de 1765, Antón Rosso d'Ager 1765, Ezpeleta 1779.

On 4 de novembre de 1956 it is visited by E. Boixadera.

Curiously, the three known surveys of the cavity were carried out coinciding in time, between the years 1981 and 1982.
