Camarasa • Noguera 27m 14m

A 27-metre-long cave in Camarasa, with a height difference of +14 metres.

Characteristics

Location

It is located in the serra del Mont-roig. To get there, go to the village of Vilanova de la Sal and continue towards the railway halt; we will turn right towards the ermita de Montalegre. Once we reach the junction that leads to the ermita, we will follow the track on the right towards the coll de Porta. Before reaching it we find a cliff on the left; below the highest wall (Pala Alta) the wide mouth of the Cova Gran can be seen from the track at about 50 metres high, and about 10 metres lower down the mouth of the Cova de l'Estaca can be seen.

Description

Morphology

The Cova Gran has a height difference of +14 metres and a length of 27 metres. It is accessed from the left, coming out onto a ramp of blocks. Then, a scramble places us in a flat chamber with a short passage that has no continuation.

Progression

To access the cova Gran a good number of “spits” were installed, which the climbers who visit the area took it upon themselves to render useless.

History

Explored by the GELL in March 1996. The caves of this sector of the Mont-roig near the coll de Porta seem to have formerly been the object of visits in order to extract sparry calcite (sal de llop), at least this seems to be confirmed by the remains found in the different caves of this cliff. With the exception of the Cova Gran.
