A cave with a 17-metre passage in Camarasa, in the Mont-roig range, with the Cova Gran and the Cova de l'Estaca.

Camarasa • Noguera 17m

A cave with a 17-metre passage in Camarasa, in the Mont-roig range, with the Cova Gran and the Cova de l'Estaca.

Characteristics

Location

It is located in the Mont-roig range. To reach it, go to the village of Vilanova de la Sal and continue towards the railway halt; turn right towards the ermita de Montalegre. Once at the junction leading to the ermita, continue along the track on the right towards the coll de Porta; before reaching it, there is a cliff on the left. Below the highest wall (Pala Alta), the wide mouth of the Cova Gran can be seen from the track at a height of about 50 metres, and about 10 metres lower down the mouth of the Cova de l'Estaca can be seen. Some terraces make access to the latter easier; nevertheless, an iron bar driven into the rock shows how long ago it was explored. To access the cova Gran, a good number of “spits” were installed, which the climbers visiting the area took it upon themselves to render useless.

Description

Morphology

It is a conduit formed along a fairly narrow joint. A cave with a 17-metre passage in Camarasa.

History

Explored by the GELL in March 1996. The caves of this sector of the Mont-roig near the coll de Porta appear to have formerly been visited in order to extract sparry calcite (sal de llop), at least this seems to be confirmed by the remains found in the different caves of this cliff. With the exception of the Cova Gran.
