Characteristics

Location

It is located in the Mont-roig range. To get there, go to the village of Vilanova de la Sal and follow the direction of the railway halt; we will turn right towards the ermita de Montalegre. Once we reach the junction that leads to the ermita, we will continue along the track on the right towards the coll de Porta; before reaching it we find a cliff on the left. Below the highest wall (Pala Alta), the wide mouth of the Cova Gran can be seen from the track at a height of about 50 metres, and about 10 metres lower down the mouth of the Cova de l'Estaca can be seen. From here we continue a little further along the track; it separates from the cliff, and at this point a small path climbs up to the foot of the cliff and leads us to the wide entrance of the cave.

Description

Morphology

The large vestibule shows signs of having served as a livestock enclosure. A block makes it easier for us to climb up to a first landing. In total it has a vertical drop of +22 metres and a length of 46 metres.

Speleothems

A flowstone trickles enough water to fill the small gours, and from this comes the naming of the cave. The flowstone is passed by a small passage without problems; the flowstone does not end here, it has some lateral steps and climbs up to find a rounded passage that places us at the upper mouth.

Progression

A block makes it easier for us to climb up to a first landing. The flowstone is passed by a small passage without problems; the flowstone has some lateral steps and climbs up to find a rounded passage that places us at the upper mouth.

History

Explored by the GELL in March 1998. The caves of this sector of Mont-roig near the coll de Porta seem to have formerly been the object of visits in order to extract sparry calcite (sal de llop), at least this seems to be confirmed by the remains found in the different caves of this cliff. With the exception of the Cova Gran.
