Description
Morphology
Wide cave of 14 m of passage and 11 m of extent, with a low ceiling that forces one to pass through it crouching. In its inner part and on the S wall, there is an impassable passage; the N zone of the cavity gradually loses height until it becomes filled with sediments and makes passage impracticable.
Speleothems
There are some wall formations.
History
Font i Sagué in his Catàlech (1897) mentions a Cova Freda one hour from Collbató and says that it is 60 pams deep and 25 high. He adds: “és molt rallenta y d'això segurament li ve'l nom que porta” (sic). He does not indicate the source of the information. A few years later, Faura in his Recull (1909) mentions it again and gives it 13 m of length. But that same year of 1909, the Revista Montserratina publishes a map of the mountain and two caves with the name Freda appear referenced. One with the addition of Cova Freda 2 which is undoubtedly the one known near la Cova del Salnitre and another, further west, simply as Cova Freda. We cannot know which of the two Font was referring to or at least there are many doubts. The fact is that of the one located further west there was absolutely no news.
After 113 years, the companions Montse Mañosa and Jordi Navarro (Centre Excursionista de Castellar del Vallès) decided to go to the area where the 1909 cartography more or less indicated. After much work in an area of difficult passage they finally managed to locate this cave.
With good judgment and in order to differentiate it from the better-known Cova Freda, they decided to catalogue it as Cova Freda del Frare de Baix.
