A 130-metre-long cave in l'Espluga de Francolí, known as cova del Castell, closed with an iron door.

Characteristics

Location

Just in front of the parking area of cova de l'Espluga and on the other side of avinguda de Catalunya, we find a landscaped area on a slope that reaches carrer del Castell. Through the middle of this landscaped area a street goes up; halfway up we find an enclosed sector with metal mesh and a grille door. From here a level path leads us in about 25 metres to the cave mouth, which is closed with an iron door.

Description

Morphology

The mouth, closed by an iron door, gives access to a gallery running E-W. Towards the E, we find a small passage that soon ends, while towards the W, we find a more or less straight gallery with widths ranging between 5 and 8 metres. The total length is 129.50 metres.

History

A cavity very well known in the village, some cite it as cova del Castell, we suppose because it is located beneath the old castle, which was dismantled between 1860 and 1888 to build the new church. During the war of 1936, it served as an air-raid shelter. The first speleological reference is from the exploration and survey carried out by the ERE-CEC in 1985.
