Capafonts • Baix Camp 20m

A 20 m cave at the Motllats (Capafonts), a single ascending gallery about 8 m wide and 2 m high, with an entrance protected by a dry-stone wall.

Characteristics

Location

From Mont-ral take the TV-7045 road towards la Febró. After km 7 and at the junction with the road coming from Vilaplana, a track leaves to the right that climbs towards the Motllats. After quite a few kilometres and various junctions, you pass the head of the barranc de la Pixera and reach a broad plain. Continue until you find a path that, towards the N, leads to the Pena Roja. To the right of this path, about a hundred metres ahead and before reaching the cliff, there is an esplanade, beside which is the Forat del Pere Pòstol (See the alternative itinerary in the file for this cavity).

From this point continue onwards to the head of the barranc and keep going on the level for just over 100 metres eastwards, where the cave is found.

As already happened with the Forat del Pere Pòstol, the cavity was initially placed in the municipality of Mont-ral (Alt Camp), but it is actually in that of Capafonts (Baix Camp), as was already corrected in the catalogue for that comarca (1984).

Description

Morphology

It consists of a single gallery about 20 metres long, slightly ascending, about 8 metres wide and about 2 metres high along almost its entire length.

Other details

The entrance is protected by a dry-stone wall one metre high, which indicates its former use for keeping livestock.

History

Cited by J. Iglésies in 1927 as the Coves del Rei, with a careful description of it. It seems to have served as a refuge during the Civil War. Well known to hikers who travel through the area. In August 2017, members of the SIE – CEA (Josu Rizu and Lluïsa Mengual) visited it and made a sketch and photographs of the cavity.
