Description

Morphology

Currently most of the caves that make up the Parc de les Coves Prehistòriques de Serinyà are blurred with respect to their original form. A large part of their ceilings, when not the entire cavity, are collapsed and the areas that have not yet been excavated remain completely refilled with sediments, essentially clay and fragments of travertine, which hide the forms and the location of the walls. The Reclau Viver cave, for being completely excavated and for having a piece of intact ceiling, is the one that best shows us its original morphology.

It is the northernmost cave of the group of caves of the Park, it has about 20 metres of passage and between 2 and 3 metres of width, except for the connecting passage between the two chambers. The first measures 6x6x4 metres, while the second is an elongated enclosure of N-S direction, whose ceiling collapsed after the Solutrean period. Currently an artificial cover covers this space.

History

The first excavations directed by Dr. Josep Mª Coromines began on 21 March 1944, and after a brief pause in August of that same year, they continued until 1947.
