Characteristics

Location

At kilometre 43.5 of the C-63 road, once past the town of La Cellera de Ter and 200 metres before reaching the river Ter, where the El Pasteral reservoir is located, we will turn left onto a path that in a short distance will take us to the quarry where the cavity opens.

From a note that appeared on 'l'espeleobloc' on 12 June 2010, we learned that iron grilles had been placed at the two entrances to the cave. Currently (2021) to access the cave a permit must be requested via an application to the town council; this, in 2020, made an investment of 10,000€ to repair the cave.

Description

Morphology

Two entrances give access to the cave. A first gallery 1.5 metres wide heads SW and soon turns towards the S, at which point a vertical passage opens that communicates with a lower gallery. Here the cavity divides into two sectors: to the SE it is formed by a group of galleries and small chambers connected to one another, while in the NW sector it begins in a narrow conduit that reaches the end of a wider gallery oriented S-N and that continues on the opposite side with a somewhat labyrinthine area that heads towards the W until reaching a new N-S gallery of 40 metres where the cavity ends. The lower part consists of a 40-metre fissure that develops beneath the first part of the cave described. The cavity is quite damaged by mining extraction.

History

The first bibliographic mention is given by F. Riuró in 1942 in an archaeological article. Although the cave appears to have been discovered in 1920 by carrying out some mining blasts.
