Arnes • Terra Alta 5m

Archaeologically interesting rock shelter at the Port (Arnes), with well-preserved structures and medieval remains.

Characteristics

Location

Leaving Arnes along the Calvari path, follow the Mas Nou path to a very pronounced meander of the riu dels Estrets. From here, go up the barranc Gros to the confluence of two ravines and ascend along the ridge line that separates them up to above the grau that overlooks the easternmost ravine. Higher up, a crag marks the start of the cliff, followed along its base by a path that ends at the rock shelters (C, D and E on the topography) located at the foot of the cova del Moro. Description

Morphology

Large rock shelter with an approximate floor plan of 15 x 4 metres, divided by an irregular step of 1 to 1.5 metres (A and B on the topography). Its entire floor is covered with a large quantity of bird droppings, among which remains of mud with straw can be seen, also covering part of the walls. The best-preserved structure is the one on the upper level, built on a block that fell from the ceiling. It has two chambers 1 metre high, with the base reinforced by small trunks. Inside one of the chambers there is a sign that there was once a shelf.

Progression

To reach it, about 20 metres of wall must be climbed. At present, access is only possible thanks to artificial climbing, and everything suggests that the ancient inhabitants of the site reached it by using trunks, of which some remains are still preserved.

Other details

The few archaeological remains studied appear to belong to the medieval period, but very possibly the cavity was inhabited earlier.

History

Cavity known since time immemorial. In the present day, the first to reach it was the CADE-CEC climber Kildo Carreté.
