A 116-metre-long cave in Sant Aniol de Finestres, accessed from Sant Feliu de Pallerols and first explored in 1968.

Characteristics

Location

The cave is located in Sant Aniol de Finestres. Although the first explorers went there from Santa Pau, today the most suitable route to reach it is via Sant Feliu de Pallerols.

Along the C-63 road from Sant Esteve d'en Bas to Sant Feliu de Pallerols, at kilometre 61.625 on the left, a road branches off in the direction of Sant Iscle de Colltort; after this small settlement we continue towards El Ventós. At Can Tià, in the Coll Sa Rella, we enter the private property of El Ventós, which at present (2021) may be crossed. After 775 metres, at the Coll de Can Barranc according to the ICGC or Coll dels 7 camins according to the local people, on the left we find a steep cemented ramp on a climb of a few metres; once at the top we follow the wider dirt track on the left, which first levels out and then descends slightly until, after 700 metres, we reach Coll Ciuró (Aulina de la Creu), where we leave the vehicle.

From here two paths set out: the one on the left, which we ignore, leads to the Collet de Sant Jordi and to the Grau de l'Escaler which climbs from Santa Pau. We must follow the one on the right, which, almost level, brings us to the place known as l'Estret de Gibraltar; from here the path begins the descent towards the Torrent del Grau. Shortly before reaching it we find a damaged track that runs parallel to the Torrent del Grau; we follow it to the right, downstream.

Here we have two options: following the track, we cross the torrent and by a narrow path it brings us to the track that runs along the bottom of the Fageda Fosca, parallel to the torrent; the other option is to follow the track until reaching the confluence with the aforementioned track that crosses the torrent, at present completely blurred.

Once on the track that climbs along the right bank and parallel to the torrent, we will be climbing over several trees in the middle of the track (a consequence of storm Gloria) for some 400 metres, until reaching a torrent larger than those we have been encountering (UTM ETRS89: 464585 – 4663011). This torrent, located on the left bank, if we ascend it for 72 metres we will reach the Cova de les Angúnies; then we must continue ascending the torrent for 125 metres more, where we will find the mouth of the cavity on the left bank at a somewhat elevated point of the torrent bed. The route from the vehicle is 3.25 kilometres, with a drop of 120 metres.

The bibliography contains the track of the route.

Note: We have observed that the coordinates do not coincide with the left bank of the torrent on the ICGC map; we think the error is certainly not the satellites'.

Description

Morphology

It has two entrance openings that immediately become a single narrow conduit, and which quickly turns left to descend over a step into a small chamber; the gallery narrows again to lead into a new chamber. From here it continues towards the E along a gallery with two levels; along the lower one it turns left and bifurcates, but after a few metres it unifies again, turning once more 90º, now to the right, and becomes a tall, narrow gallery. It then widens and continues forward with slight zigzags for some 50 metres more; in the last stretch the section has descended notably and takes on a rounded form, with a perceptible notch right in the middle of the floor.

A new turn to the left and, a little further on, another to the right allow, by means of a step, access to a narrow gallery some 20 metres long, which leads into a chamber full of blocks. At its end a new gallery begins, parallel to the previous one, and after a few metres it ends in a small final pit where the cavity ends.

History

The first partial exploration was carried out on 28, 29 and 30 June 1968 by the SIE del CEA; they returned again from 21 to 24 September of the same year and carried out the survey, although this would not be published until the appearance in 1980 of volume 4 of the Espeleològic de Catalunya catalogue.

Hypothetically this cavity could be the cova d'Angel Rull, explored by the GIE del CE Gràcia in October 1966, to which they assigned a hundred metres of passage, but of which nothing more has ever been known.
