Characteristics

Location

It is located to the SW of the summit of l'Espina (el Port).

From Horta de Sant Joan you go to the leisure area of the Mas de la Franqueta, where the car is left. Over a bridge you cross the riu dels Estrets and continue to the confluence of the barranc del Carrer Ample, which must be followed along its bed to an old marble quarry. From here a path climbs back up the whole ravine where we will only find one fork: on the left the barranc del Riu Sec, but you must continue on the right along the Carrer Ample to ascend through the steep Estret de les Palanquetes. Afterwards the ravine opens up and there is a stretch through the forest.

Suddenly the trace of vegetation is lost and the geological spectacle begins, in a stretch of about three kilometres: capricious folds, cliffs, needles..., a place with a spectacular geomorphology.

On the left the barranc de la Rambla emerges, in the middle of the folds, which connects the Carrer Ample with the Fenassar. A few metres after entering, the Cova del Frare (or del Flare) is found.

Description

Morphology

You enter through a mouth about 3-4 m high, protected by a dry-stone wall divided in two on each side of the entrance, into a single gallery of regular dimensions that is closed off after a few metres.

No topography is available, so the exact dimensions of the cavity are unknown.

Speleothems

Shortly after entering, on the left wall and 1-2 m from the floor, there is a series of "rock" paintings of the Levantine art type, made with a certain style but totally FALSE.

History

Known since remote times. It had served as a refuge for shepherds and their flocks.
