Characteristics

Location

On the cliffs located to the east of the village of Tagamanent, to the E of the Pedralba and to the NE of the Folló farmhouse. The entrance, because of its large size, is visible from afar from the paths that run along the opposite slope of the Congost river.

Description

Morphology

A good-sized entrance, 13 metres wide by 7 high. It hangs in the very middle of the cliff and has privileged views towards the cingles de Bertí. The cavity has two well-defined sections. The first is a large chamber that maintains cross-sections not much smaller than those of the entrance. Suddenly, the ceiling lowers and gives way to the second section, a forked gallery where you will have to crouch down to reach the bottom. The floor is of clay or rock, depending on the spot, and in the second section we find some blocks of a certain size. Total route: 28 metres.

Progression

To get there, we will take the asphalted track that climbs from Tagamanent to the pla de la Calma. When we have gone about a kilometre and a half, and well before a sharp bend to the right, we will leave the car at a widening on the right from which an ascending path sets off. We will follow it until we reach a spot where there is a muddy area, an old spring. From here on, the path becomes complicated. Just past the spring, we will go up along a faintly marked path with some forks that can be misleading. When we find some white marks (very precarious), we will follow them as they will lead us directly to the entrance. Just before reaching it, the path runs along a ledge that ends at a handrail, since the cavity hangs in the cliff. From the car to the cave: about 20 minutes.

History

A cavity known in the area since time immemorial. The only data known are the product of the exploration carried out by members of the Espeleo Club de Gràcia and Grup d'Espeleologia de Badalona on 7 June 2015.

About the place name "Cova del Duc": by chance, we learned why the cave is called del Duc. While carrying out the survey, we noticed that on the floor of the entrance chamber there was an accumulation of numerous bones – perhaps hundreds – of small vertebrates (birds, shrews and other small animals). Right on the ceiling, vertically above it, we find a hole where the stains of the droppings of the eagle owl that had its lair here can still be made out.

Bio

The eagle owl (Bubo bubo) is a bird of nocturnal habits that in its digestive process regurgitates pellets. The accumulation of bones is the result of the decomposition of the pellets regurgitated by the eagle owl from its lair. Only the bones are preserved, which is why we think that the eagle owl stopped inhabiting the cave many years ago.
