Description

Morphology

It consists of a short vestibule that ends in a narrow passage through which it connects to a gallery that ends a few metres further on.

History

Puig y Larraz (1896) mentions a Cova de Guanta, referring to an article by F. Maspons (1881), and comments that legend says Count Borrell hid there.

Font i Sagué (1897), in his Catálech Espeleològich de Catalunya, while still citing the Cova de Guanta, adds the Cova del Comte, although he places it beneath the castle of Sentmenat, when in fact it should say the castle of Guanta. It seems evident that, despite the repetition, it appears to be the same cavity.

Legend says that in the year 985 Count Borrell, after losing the battle of Matabous (Montcada) against the troops of Al-Mansur, took refuge in this cave, although it served him little since he was discovered by the Moors and they cut off his head. (Historians set the year 992 as that of Count Borrell's death).

We suspect (based on the information given on the website of the Ajuntament de Sentmenat) that the true Cova del Comte could be the one catalogued as Cave no. 5 of the Mal Grau, although there are people who call la Cova the one hidden behind the fig tree. (Data to be reviewed)
