Characteristics

Location

On the BV-5202 road from Sant Julià de Vilatorta to Vilalleons, on reaching kilometre 3.35 we will follow a track on the left, which in about 500 metres will take us to the Gili farmhouse. Just after passing the farmhouse, the track makes a sharp bend to the right towards the old hay barn, currently restored as a dwelling. Right at the bend, a path leaves that passes behind this building and heads NE; after about 210 metres, on the right of the path we will find a trail marked with cairns that in about 60 metres will take us to the cavity.

Description

Morphology

A narrow entrance open in the ground between two sandstone blocks, and after the small step at the entrance, we reach a gallery running N-S that soon increases in size until reaching a joint intersection, the point where the widest area of the cavity is found; continuing W, the gallery ends after a few metres, while continuing E, after a few metres we find a new joint intersection, finding a gallery that runs parallel to that of the entrance; continuing E, we will find another gallery that runs parallel to the two previous ones.

History

The entrance of the cavity was found by José Castell, Josefa Rius, Enrique Mola and José Rojas of the Club Excursionista de Gràcia, on 25 September 1960; a few days later they return again to clear the entrance, it being necessary to remove about 3 cubic metres of earth in order to get through.

At first they call it cova del Gili, but because the cave was found around the feast of Saint Michael, this was the name that predominated in the area.

In the middle of the sixties, a man from Vic named Eduard Clos rediscovers this cave, as well as other cavities in the area.

In 1970 members of the SIE del CE Àliga carry out the exploration and survey of this cavity, as well as that of others in the area.

In the winter of 1984, the archaeologists J. Castany and LL. Guerrero, carrying out excavations, find some archaeological remains there; they were aware of the name of the cavity, but when they publish the corresponding work, they come to call it cova del Gegant; in that publication, on page 331 we find a footnote, where they explain the strange theory they use to end up naming this cavity with the erroneous name of cova del Gegant.
