Characteristics

Location

About 200 m west of the ruins of the castle of s'Avellana, located on a small promontory on the right bank of the Ter, in what is now the tail of the Sau reservoir. About 400 m NE of Mas Salou. To get there, the best is to start from Roda de Ter, where at the entrance of the village begins the paved track that leads to Tavèrnoles, which we will have to leave halfway to reach Mas Salou.

From here we will continue west along the track that passes behind the farmhouse. A few hundred metres further on, a path comes out on the right that follows the foot of a cliff where we will find numerous rock shelters, the most important of which is the balma de Salou. When we are finishing the section of rock shelters, and about 200 m before reaching the castle of s'Avellana, we will find the cave on the left of the path and about 15 m from it, hanging on a cliff with rock shelters.

Description

Morphology

The cave is hanging on a cliff with rock shelters. Fundamentally, the cave is formed by a room of 7 x 6 m with a very flat floor occupied by sand and silts from the decomposition of the sandstone in which the cave opens. It is a fairly habitable space, although the height is only of the order of one metre, constituting a good refuge or hiding place.

On the west side of the mouth, the cavity continues as a ledge, forming a small balcony hanging about 8 m from the base of the cliff and about 10 m long by 1.5 m wide.

Progression

To access its interior it is necessary to make a climb of about 3 m. In the event that we do not feel like making the climb, we can also access it by traversing the cliff that begins a few metres to the right of the mouth, passes over a large block and enters the cavity through a not very large hole (the “foradet”).

History

Cavity unpublished in the speleological catalogues until the visit of members of the ECMB and the GEB in April 2022.
