Characteristics

Location

By the road that leads from the coll de Comiols towards Sant Salvador de Toló (L-911), after 700 metres we will turn left onto a track that leads to cal Castellí; we will follow it until we find a padlock that prevents vehicles from passing. From here 1200 metres remain until reaching cal Castellí. Once at the farmhouse, we find a huge metal water tank; we must pass in front of it and continue in a W direction, to rejoin the path that passes by the farmhouse, and thus avoid the pack of dogs that guard it. The path continues and passes below and to the left of some cultivated fields; further on the path begins to descend to the left of an incipient torrent, it reaches a point where the main path is left to the left and we cross the torrent, following along its right side until we soon reach the ruined village of Montadó; we will head W of the village where we will find the cova de Montadó.

Description

Morphology

It is a large rock shelter worked with several chambers inside; it has an entrance-to-back route of 26 metres where it is totally dark, the height decreases until it is less than 0.5 metres at the back, mainly due to the large accumulation of excrement produced by the flocks of sheep that for a long time have used the cave as a livestock pen.

History

Cave used and known in the area since prehistoric times. The first speleological mention of the cavity was made by Manuel Cortés in the book “El Montsec i Muntanyes veïnes (1984)”.

Both the Institut Cartogràfic de Catalunya and the official gazetteer of toponymy of Catalonia cite this cavity with the name “cova de Montadó de Dalt”, but they wrongly place it in the municipality of Vilanova de Meià and in the comarca of Noguera.
