Characteristics

Location

Driving along the GIP-5121 road from Banyoles to Esponellà, 100 metres before the village of Martís de Dalt, we will turn left and continue straight on towards the Martís power station. Near the power station there are several buildings: on the right we will find the administration or engineers' house, then the Casa Nova, which is currently (2014) a restaurant, while on the left side we find a residence for the elderly and at the end of the tarmac road, ca la Mercè. Just where the restaurant's fence ends, we find a sign indicating the path to the caves; we must follow the line of the fence for a few tens of metres and we will soon find the cave entrances, located a few metres below the path. Cave No. 2 is easily recognised by the large funnel formed by its entrance.

Description

Morphology

A funnel-shaped depression 4 metres in diameter by 2 deep gives access to an elongated chamber running N-S, 4x8 metres, where we find the entrance artificially fitted out with masonry. On the S side of the chamber a 5-metre-deep shaft opens, reaching a lower chamber, irregular and stony, from which short branches and fissures emerge among the blocks at the bottom.

History

The cave was discovered on 19 September 1952 by J.M. Verdura, vicar of Banyoles, and two young people who accompanied him. Dr. J.M. Corominas named the caves with the discoverer's pseudonym: Mariver de Martís. That same year Dr. Corominas began the excavations.

In 1974 the GEIS of the CE Empordanès carried out a survey of the cave's plan.

In 1981, Joan Borràs (GES-CMB) made a new survey of the cave, which was published in volume 6 of the Catàleg Espeleològic de Catalunya.
