A 60 m deep pit in Martís (Esponellà), with two entrances in an artificial trench.

Characteristics

Location

Driving along the GIP-5121 road from Banyoles to Esponellà, 100 metres before the village of Martís de Dalt, we will turn left and continue straight towards the Martís power station. Near the power station we will find several buildings: on the right, the administration or engineers' house; next, the Casa Nova, which at present (2014) is a restaurant; on the left side, a residence for the elderly; and at the end of the paved road, ca la Mercè. The road curves round behind it heading towards the W. 114 metres from this house, on the left side of the road, there is an artificial trench about 3 metres wide running roughly N-S, dug for the extraction of travertine materials. Inside this trench and 24 metres from the track on the left we find the first entrance, and 10 metres further on is the second entrance.

Description

Morphology

The two entrances of the cavity open inside an artificial trench about 3 metres wide and about four high. The total drop is 60 metres (-57/+3).

Progression

Some sloping passages lead to small descending galleries, ending above a -28 metre pit, which is no more than a long E-W trending joint, difficult to traverse because of its narrowness and the blocks wedged in the walls and at the base. Entering through the entrance situated further N, there is a small ascending gallery.

Other details

Inside the entrance situated further S, we find a large quantity of rubbish from the nearby houses.

History

Explored and surveyed by the GIS de Girona on 9 April and 28 October 1974.
