Small two-chamber cavity in the granites of the Maresme, on the S slope of Montcabrer, within the Parc de la Serralada de Marina.

Characteristics

Location

On the S slope of Montcabrer, 70 metres below the cross at the summit and a few metres below the dividing ridge of the municipalities of Cabrils and Cabrera de Mar.

It can be accessed from the eastern end of the town of Cabrils by going along the end of carrer de la Verge de Núria, from where a kind of path leads to the summit of Montcabrer, the cave being found about 30 metres to its right.

From the cross on Montcabrer there are some white marks (data from 2011) that also lead to the cave.

The cavity is located within the Parc de la Serralada de Marina.

Description

Morphology

Small cavity formed by two connected chambers, each with its own opening to the outside. The larger chamber measures 5 by 3 metres and the small one 4 by 1 metres. The maximum height of the ceiling is about 3 metres in the larger chamber.

Its origin seems to be due to a disintegration of the granite mass from some microfissures, creating a primitive cavity that has subsequently been affected by wind action, giving rise to some quite curious alveolar forms.

We could say that it is a taffoni.

History

Known since time immemorial, and the two names: Encantades and Bones Dones, must refer to some legend that we do not know, but which seems to say that a good witch lived in the cave.

N. Font i Sagué, with some friends and accompanied by a certain Coll de Vilassar, visited it in February 1897, as he records in his Catàlech of the same year.

It went practically unnoticed in speleological circles until members of the GES included it in 1961 in the catalogue of the province of Barcelona (vol 1).

Currently, both the Park's signs and the ICC map mark it only as Cova de les Bones Dones.

In 2003, members of the Grup d'Espeleologia de Badalona visited it again and made a new survey and published a brief note, with which we update the record.

More recently (2013) members of the GEB explored and surveyed two small nearby cavities, almost unpublished, which appear, together with the Cova de les Encantades, on the blog: cavitatsdecatalunya.blogspot (managed by Jordi de Valles) and make us realise that the cave, contrary to what had always been catalogued, is not in the municipality of Cabrils, since although by a small distance, it is located in that of Cabrera de Mar.
