Characteristics

Location

From el Perelló along the TV-3022 road towards Rasquera, at kilometre 3.86 there is a large lay-by on the left-hand side where one can leave the road and take the dirt track that continues in the opposite direction to the one we were coming from. After 240 metres we find a junction; we continue along the middle path for 80 metres where we find a new junction that we follow to the left and, 75 metres further on, we turn off to the right; we follow this track for 1 kilometre until reaching a junction where we park; if a 4×4 vehicle is available one can continue about 225 metres along the left-hand path, which is in poor condition; at this point we find a sharp left-hand bend, we continue a further 90 metres in the direction of the tail of the reservoir; the cave is located a few metres away on the right hydrographic bank of the barranc de les Calobres.

Description

Morphology

The cave, oriented to the E, forms a cavity 5 metres long, with a rounded mouth 3.5 metres both wide and high, with a large block of rock in front of the entrance.

Speleothems

Outside, in the extension of the right-hand side wall of the cave that forms a cliff, near the entrance and about 3 metres above the ground, there is a horizontal band of painted signs in a very vivid red tone, although very faintly visible because they are covered by a stalagmitic formation.

History

Known since ancient times, the only known graphic reference to the paintings was made by P. Bosch and J. Colominas.

S. Vilaseca, in 1973, was the first to cast doubt on the conservation of the paintings.

The report carried out by Ana Alonso in 1988 confirms the disappearance of the paintings.
