Cova d'en Mallorca

A 30-metre-long cave that occasionally acts as a "trop-plein" in Albanyà.

Albanyà • Alt Empordà 30m 2m

A 30-metre-long cave that occasionally acts as a "trop-plein" in Albanyà.

Characteristics

Location

Follow the track that from Albanyà passes by the Bassegoda Park campsite and heads towards the Coll de Pincaró; leave the vehicle at la Molina and follow the path that climbs the Muga along the hydrographic left bank, until passing the confluence of the torrent de Ferrerós. After about eighty metres and on the other side of the river, we will find the cavity at the place called "deus d'en Mallorca".

Description

Morphology

An eroded mouth of 1.1 x 0.5 metres gives way to a subhorizontal bedding plane occupied by blocks covered with concretionary crusts where we can observe micro plunge pools. This gallery is intercepted by a short joint, where on the right a half-metre-high stalagmite stands out. The total drop is 2.5 metres.

Speleothems

The blocks of the bedding plane are covered with concretionary crusts and, to the right of the short joint, a half-metre-high stalagmite stands out.

Hydrology

It is an old spring that acted under pressure as a consequence of the water input coming from a lower level of the cavity. Today, it drains through different points located in the bed of the Muga river, which has given its name to this area. In addition, the cavity acts as a hydrostatic collector where the rise of groundwater uses it as a "trop-plein". Because its location is very close to the river, it occasionally becomes a sink due to the effect of the "Mugades".

Progression

After a narrow gallery, one must climb up to the upper part of a collapsed joint that connects with the active water level of the cavity.

History

Cavity discovered by Joan Casellas of Can Badosa, who accompanied members of the GEB who carried out the exploration.
