Balma dels Ferrers nº 1, formerly fitted out as a dwelling, in Santa Maria de Besora.

Characteristics

Location

We will set out from Santa Maria de Besora along the track that leads to Llaers. After about 2 Km we will take a turn-off to the right that leads to the Ferrers farmhouse; the track continues in a steep climb. After about 1300 m we will leave the car on a very tight bend and continue on foot heading East for about 300 m until we find the cliff face on our left; a small path will lead us to the balma dels Ferrers nº 1.

Description

Morphology

The balma dels Ferrers nº 1 has a length of 30 m, a depth of 5 m and a height of 3 m.

Other details

We find it completely worked, with the remains of rooms and a fireplace.

History

These balmes were often inhabited by farmers with few resources; they were usually peasants who cultivated the lands of the neighbouring houses, the Ferrers, el Teixidor, la Vila, la Serra. Next to the dwellings and within the balma itself, the peasants kept the livestock shed. It seems that they were inhabited until the beginning of the 20th century.
