Spectacular rock shelter with a waterfall on the riera de Fontcaldes, in Avià, about 50 metres wide and 9 metres high on average.

Characteristics

Location

Along the BV-4135 road from Cal Rosal to Avià, on reaching kilometre 4.26 you must turn left onto a track that we follow for about a hundred metres. On the left we find a path that follows the riera de Fontcaldes upstream at a certain height above the stream bed. After 150 metres the path crosses the stream just above the waterfall; the path descends along the right hydrographic side of the stream and we soon find a turn-off to the left that in a few metres leads us to the rock shelter, at the base of the waterfall.

Description

Morphology

Rock shelter about 50 metres wide and a little more than 6 metres deep, with an average ceiling height of 9 metres.

Hydrology

In front of the rock shelter the waters of the riera de Fontcaldes fall, forming a spectacular waterfall.

History

Known locally since time immemorial. The first reference to the rock shelter dates from when Marc Solé published it on his website (engarrista.com) in February 2021.

Taking advantage of a veterans' outing in which the route published by “l'engarrista” is followed, we take the opportunity to collect data and make the survey of the rock shelter. About to publish the record on Espeleoíndex we have observed that the colleagues of the GE Badalona were also there in June 2021, having published the record last August on the GEB website.
