Characteristics

Location

We will take the BV-5207 road that leads to Tavertet; when a kilometre and a half remains to reach it, right at point km 11 we will take a path that, climbing steeply, will place us at the foot of the cingles de Sunyer, where we will find the rock shelter and the farmhouse of the Sunyer Vell (Sunyer de Baix), which is partially ruined.

Description

Morphology

It is a large rock shelter, south-facing, with remains of two perpendicular walls that form a right angle. The walls are made of dressed stone laid horizontally without mortar. The walls are still relatively well preserved. Of the roof only small nooks remain, and the state of the beams that separate the different floors invites one not to enter for safety reasons.

Progression

From the side of the farmhouse a stone staircase begins, the start of a path that overcomes the cingle and heads towards the farmhouse of the Sunyer de Dalt, this one inhabited and in good condition.

History

The large size of the farmhouse, located partly beneath the rock shelter, shows us the importance it once had. The preserved remains could correspond to a possible use of the rock shelter as a habitat nucleus in the early medieval period (11th, 12th centuries). The rock shelter was the subject of two archaeological interventions directed by Assumpta Serra: the first, in 1987, and the second, in 1994.
